Submitting to Digital Dragon
Guidelines
Digital Dragon publishes science fiction and fantasy (including all its sub-genres). The stories we’re interested in have a maximum word count of 1500 words. It’s not that we don’t like longer stories; we just don’t like to read them on a computer monitor. Having said that, we also have interest in publishing a couple serials; query if interested.
Digital Dragon will consider poetry as well. We will consider all forms, although generally we prefer poems under 50 lines. Just make sure it has elements of Science Fiction or Fantasy
Digital Dragon is a family-friendly, Christian-friendly market. As such, we like stories without excessive or explicit profanity, sexual content, gore, etc. Often these things can be used as a crutch for poor writing. If they are essential to your story then we are probably not the best place to seek publication. Please note, “family-friendly” should not be taken to mean this is a children’s publication. It isn’t. This is a market developed for intelligent, creative teens and adults.
No simultaneous submissions. (Stories submitted to more then one market)
Multiple submissions are okay. However please submit each work separately and no more than three works at a time (we have a small editorial staff).
Concerning Reprints: We strongly prefer previously unpublished works. We will, in rare instances, publish reprints. If you are submitting one, please let us know that in the cover letter, why you want it reprinted, and where it was first seen (please note that if a work is publicly available on the Internet, it is considered previously published).
Our response time is usually about 3-4 weeks. However please do no query until 60 days have passed.
Art Submissions
Art for our magazine should be family-friendly. This does not mean we’re looking for childrens’ art. Just that we are not looking for scantily clad women or extreme violence.
Art should be submitted as a JPEG file, at about 120dpi, and no larger than 800 x 800 (pixels). You will be responsible for photographing or scanning your own work for submission.
On Copyright — All submitting artists understand and agree that the work will be usable by Digital Dragon Magazine (DDM), for the purposes of promoting the site and its content, as well as its stated purpose as “cover art” for DDM (during this time, Artist will always be properly credited). After six months from publication, copyright will revert to the Artist, who may, at his or her discretion, decide whether to allow continued use by DDM.
Copyright and Publication
We are interested in first electronic rights until the date it is published, then do what you want with it. But remember, once it appears here, it can only appear anywhere else as a reprint, so make sure that’s what you want when you send it here. We also would like permission to include your story in a year end “best of” anthology, if selected -- but that will be up to the discretion of the writer.
There is a minimum archive time of 6 months from date of publication. Published stories will generally be archived indefinitely, unless otherwise arranged. If you need or want the story removed after acceptance, let us know. If you sell it somewhere else in a different medium (as an audio podcast, for example), let us know, and we’ll link to it.
Payment
Unfortunately, at this time, Digital Dragon Magazine does not pay for work. What we will do is work hard to get your story the attention it deserves, and all contributors will have permanent links to their own websites or email addresses (your preference) next to their bios on our Contributor Page.
Submit
Send all stories as an .rtf or .doc attachment to digitaldragonmagazine (at) gmail (dot) com. In the subject line put: FICTION SUBMISSION: “Name of Story,” and the word count.
The story itself should be formatted thus: double-spaced, with an extra space between paragraphs. No need to tab over for paragraphs, since they won’t be tabbed on final publication, anyway. Use a single asterisk (*) between paragraphs, when necessary to denote segmenting. Please use 12-point font, and either Times New Roman or Courier New — just to make it easier to read.
Thank you
for considering Digital Dragon for your work, and we look forward to hearing from you,
The editorial staff.
